One of the first things I do when sitting down with a new client is to take a deep dive into the systems and processes behind their business.
Why? Because having a solid set of systems and procedures in place is the backbone of any profitable, successful business. It’s that simple.
And yet, it’s very often the thing that’s missing!
As solopreneurs, we have to wear all the hats, juggle all of the things and somehow still bring in enough revenue to make ends meet at the end of the month. Sometimes it can feel like we’re on a never-ending hamster wheel, struggling to keep up with the workload and everything that needs to be done. Sound familiar?
However, when we’re working from this place, we’re operating within what is called an employee mindset. Have you ever heard the phrase ‘working in’ your business? Well, this never-ending grind and hustle is very much working ‘in’ your business as opposed to taking a bigger-picture view, what is known as ‘working on’ your business.
Here’s the thing – you know you can achieve a certain amount of success in your business without having systems in place. You’ve likely experienced this yourself in the early months and years of your business. But when you’re ready to take the next step in your business, it’s imperative that you systemise as much as you can.
In order to scale up, do more, have more and make more impact in the world, your precious time and attention as the business owner needs to be spent focusing on the activities that will get you to where you want to be. You need to spend more time ‘working on’ your business than in it.
And that’s often where I come in!
When you have solid systems in place, you as the business owner will feel a much greater sense of freedom. Not only will you have more control and awareness over what needs to happen on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, but you’ll also be able to more confidently delegate to others and find the right help to support you.
So, what sort of things should you systemise?
You will already have some awareness of what tasks need to happen on a regular basis to keep your business going – this could include:
- client onboarding and offboarding
- answering customer enquiries
- email management
- file management and storage
- sending emails to clients – newsletters, sales emails etc
- creating content for blogs / social media / podcasts / videos
- delivery of your products and services
- obtaining testimonials and case studies
- marketing and launching your goods and services
And the list goes on!
Having a process in place for each of these means it takes less energy to perform the task because you’re not scrabbling to remember what to do each time or forgetting steps. It also means that you do not have to be the one who performs it – this is the real gamechanger for your business!
